Director Chris McQuarrie has just given us our first look at Alec Baldwin in Mission: Impossible 6.

With principal photography on Mission: Impossible 6 still underway, McQuarrie has officially confirmed that Alec Baldwin will be starring in the film. The actor will be reprising his role as new IMF Director, Alan Hunley, following his introduction as the character in Rogue Nation. And like with all of the film’s other casting announcements, McQuarrie revealed Baldwin’s return with a new behind-the-scenes photo from the film, via his official Instagram account.

The second is a more light-hearted moment as Tom Cruise shares a laugh with co-stars Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill, and Baldwin.

McQuarrie is the first director to return for a second installment in the franchise after helming the fantastic fifth film, Rogue Nation. The writer-director is one of Tom Cruise‘s regular collaborators, having worked on Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Mummy and directed Jack Reacher. McQuarrie has talked at length about his plans to shake up the franchise once again, investing in the character of Ethan Hunt and driving the action into more dramatic, emotional territory. Back in February, he teased, “I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it.”

Production on Mission: Impossible 6 begun all the way back in April. The project is being shot in Paris, London, India and New Zealand with IMAX 3D cameras.

Baldwin won’t be the only unexpected familiar face set to be making an appearance in Mission: Impossible 6, with Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Sean Harris, and more all set to return for their respective roles in the film. In addition, the movie will also feature several exciting new members in its ensemble, including Henry Cavill’s mustachioed new spy, Angela Bassett’s CIA Director, and Vanessa Kirby‘s currently unknown female character. That’s an impressive ensemble, even for this franchise, that McQuarrie has assembled for Mission: Impossible 6, which is just shaping up to be one of next year’s more exciting and unpredictable blockbuster titles.

Mission: Impossible 6 is currently slated to hit theaters on July 27, 2018.
