Fast & Furious 9 Release Date Pushed Back a Year to 2020

Universal Pictures said Wednesday that the film's release will move back a year to April 10, 2020.
Fast and Furious 9 was originally set to hit theaters on April 19, 2019, but Universal announced that the ninth entry in the action franchise is now set for April 10, 2020. Even though it’s a year later, that will once again put the movie at the Easter weekend, where the series generally makes a ton of money. Universal did not disclose the reason for the shift, which was announced on Wednesday. The studio is also freeing up the 2020 slot for the upcoming “Fast and Furious” by moving the animated “Trolls 2” forward by two months from April 10, 2020, to Feb. 14, 2020.
Plot details about the ninth film have been kept under wraps. Although The Rock and Vin Diesel are both reportedly set to return for Fast & Furious 9 (setting their reported beef during the production of Fate of the Furious behind them), they are only longtime Fast & Furious cast members who appear to be locked-in for the next installment at the moment. Michelle Rodriguez has indicated that she won’t return for the ninth Fast & Furious film unless she and the franchise’s other female stars are given more substantial roles this time around (something that Diesel has publicly voiced his support for), while Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray has remained noncommittal about returning to helm the next chapter in the Fast & Furious saga.
The eighth movie in the franchise, “The Fate of the Furious,” stunned earlier this year, grossing $1.2 billion worldwide. It was directed by F. Gary Gray and starred Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. The main franchise continues with Furious 9 and Furious 10, which has a release date of April 2, 2021. It's unclear whether Furious 10 will reschedule.
Following the release of Fate of the Furious, Universal began plotting a Fast and Furious spinoff with Johnson and Jason Statham. It's possible the spinoff could be released in 2019.
